New York Nursing CE Audit Guide

New York approaches nursing continuing education differently than many states. Some requirements are tied to mandatory training rather than annual CE totals. If you've been asked to verify your training, this guide walks through it calmly.

If you've landed here, take a slow breath. Being asked about your continuing education isn't a sign that you've done something wrong. Audits are routine, and most people who go through one come out the other side just fine.

    New York Mandated-Reporter Training Deadline

Updated child-abuse training is due November 17, 2026

A 2024 change to New York's mandated-reporter law adds guidance on identifying abuse or maltreatment of children with intellectual or developmental disabilities to the state's required Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework. The New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions states that covered mandated reporters, including people who already completed earlier versions of this training, must complete the updated curriculum by November 17, 2026.

Completing the separate April 1, 2025 training update (which added implicit-bias, adverse-childhood-experience, and virtual-interaction guidance) does not by itself satisfy this later November 17, 2026 requirement. They are two different updates to the same coursework.

If you completed approved mandated-reporter training between November 1, 2022 and August 31, 2025, OP says you may be able to complete a short addendum, around 15 minutes, through most approved providers, instead of retaking the full course. If your training falls outside that window, check with an approved provider about which option applies to you.

Whether this requirement applies to your license, and whether a limited exemption is available because your practice excludes contact with children, depends on your profession and your individual circumstances. Confirm your status with your board's Office of the Professions unit before relying on general guidance.

    • Check the list of approved training providers for the updated coursework or addendum
    • Keep your completion certificate or addendum confirmation with your other license-renewal records
    • Do not assume a prior child-abuse training certificate automatically covers this update

How New York nursing audits work

The Office of the Professions may select your record for review after re-registration. The notice lists exactly what to send and the deadline to respond.

    Documents commonly requested

    • Infection control coursework documentation, on the schedule required by law
    • Child abuse identification training certificate if not previously on file
    • Documentation for any required workplace violence prevention or related content
    • Certificates from approved sponsors with sponsor numbers visible

    Organizing your response

A single PDF with a brief cover note that lists each course and matches it to the requirement makes the review easier on everyone.

The single most useful thing you can do right now is gather your records in one place. A folder on your desktop, a printed binder, or a shared drive all work. You don't need a complicated system. You just need to be able to find things.

    If documentation is missing

Reach out to the sponsor for a duplicate certificate. If the sponsor has closed, employer LMS reports, professional association records, and registration emails can sometimes help substantiate completion.

    A simple audit-response checklist

    1. 1Read the audit notice slowly. Note the deadline and exact list of documents requested.
    2. 2Make a simple folder labeled with the cycle dates being audited.
    3. 3Pull certificates of completion for every CE activity in that cycle.
    4. 4Match each certificate to the topic area or category your board requires.
    5. 5Save proof of license renewal and any required attestations.
    6. 6If a certificate is missing, contact the provider for a duplicate before the deadline.
    7. 7Scan everything as clean PDFs, named with date and course title.
    8. 8Submit through the channel the board requests. Keep a copy and a confirmation.
